A reply is where the real conversation starts. Keep it feeling like two people texting: short messages, quick replies and a tone that matches theirs.

Dos and don’ts

Match their tone

Pay attention to how they write and mirror it. If they use short, casual texts, do the same. If they write in full sentences, match that. Whatever tone you pick, keep it consistent for the whole conversation.

One idea per message

People text in short bursts, not paragraphs. If you have a few things to say, send them as separate messages, and give them a chance to respond before you add more.
  • ✅ “Great, glad that works.” then “Want me to send over a few options?”
  • ❌ “Great, glad that works. I have a few options I can send over, and I can also walk you through pricing, timing and next steps whenever you’re ready.”

Reply quickly once they engage

The moments right after someone replies are when they’re paying attention. Answer quickly, ask a follow-up question and keep the conversation going. Conversations with real back-and-forth also help keep your number in good standing.

Write reminders the way a person would

A sudden switch to a formal, automated-sounding reminder breaks the conversation you’ve built.
  • ✅ “See you Thursday at 3! I’ll text when I’m on my way.”
  • ❌ “APPOINTMENT CONFIRMATION: Thu 3:00 PM. Reply 1 to confirm or 2 to reschedule.”

Text before you call

A call from a number someone barely knows can feel intrusive. Send a quick text first to check that now is a good time.
  • ✅ “Have a couple minutes for a quick call?”
If they miss your call, follow up with a short text so they know who called and why.
  • ✅ “Just tried you. No rush, call or text back whenever works.”

Make sure they know who you are

On iMessage (blue bubbles), Blujay shares your number’s contact card automatically, so your name and photo show up on their phone. Text messages (green bubbles) don’t share contact cards automatically. Once a green-bubble contact has replied, send them your card: click + next to the message box, then Contact, and choose your card. Your name then shows whenever you text or call.

Use reactions and replies

React to a message with a tapback, like a heart or a thumbs-up, to acknowledge it without sending a whole reply. On iMessage (blue bubbles), you can also reply to a specific message so it’s clear what you’re answering. Replying to a specific message isn’t available for SMS or RCS (green bubbles).
