With Attio connected, Blujay logs your team’s calls and texts to the matching people in Attio, adds new Attio people to your Blujay contacts, and lets your team read and send texts from a person’s page in Attio. Setup is done once by a Blujay workspace owner or admin, with admin access in Attio. If your workspace is already set up, skip to Text from inside Attio.

Set up Attio

Setup has three parts.

1. Connect Attio

1

Open Integrations

In the Blujay web app, click Settings in the left sidebar, then the Integrations tab.
2

Connect

On the Attio card, click Connect. An Attio window opens.
3

Choose your workspace and allow access

Sign in to Attio and allow Blujay to connect. When you see Connection complete, close the window.
Once connected, calls and texts start logging to Attio, and contact sync is on. You can change both in the Attio settings.

2. Match your team

Matching tells Attio which teammate sent each text.
1

Open the Attio settings

On the Attio card, click the gear icon, then click Team member mapping.
2

Choose a teammate for each Attio member

For each Attio member, choose the matching Blujay teammate under Blujay teammate. Where an email matches, Blujay suggests a match marked Same email for you to confirm. Choose Leave unlinked for now for anyone who doesn’t use Blujay.
3

Save

Click Save team members.
Texts from teammates you don’t match are still logged in Attio, without a teammate.

3. Add the Blujay widget in Attio (optional)

The Blujay app adds a Messages tab to every person’s page in Attio on its own, for reading and sending texts. It also has a Blujay widget that shows your latest text with the person. An Attio admin adds the widget once for the whole workspace.
1

Open the page settings

Open any person’s page in Attio, click the ⋮ menu at the top right, and choose Configure page.
2

Add the widget

Click Add widget, choose Blujay, then click Save changes. If Add widget is greyed out, the page already has six widgets: remove one first.

Text from inside Attio

Open a person in Attio and click the Messages tab. The first time, the tab asks you to connect your Blujay account:
1

Connect Blujay

Click Connect Blujay, then Connect next to your name.
2

Sign in and approve

If you’re not signed in, sign in to Blujay with the account you text from. On Approve Attio connection, check it shows your email, then click Approve.
Each teammate connects their own account, once. The first time you open the tab in a visit it can take a few seconds to load; after that it opens straight away.
  • If you’ve texted this person before, your conversation shows, with the newest message at the bottom. Click Show earlier messages to scroll back.
  • If they’re also in a group with you, choose the conversation at the top of the tab.
  • If you haven’t texted them yet, write your first text in the box at the bottom. Blujay adds them to your contacts with their Attio name. If they have more than one number, choose one under To.
Type in the Reply box and click Send. If you have more than one Blujay number, choose which one to send from under Send from. The Blujay widget shows your latest text with the person and when it was sent, so you can see where things stand without opening the tab.
To call from Attio, use the Call with Blujay button the Chrome extension adds next to a person’s phone number. There’s a Text with Blujay button there too.

What’s logged in Attio

Blujay logs activity to the Attio person a contact is linked to (see Link contacts to Attio).
Texts on the timeline and call transcripts need an Attio Pro or Enterprise workspace.
  • Calls appear on the person’s timeline as a meeting, such as Outbound call with , with the call’s outcome and length. Answered calls include the transcript, and Attio can summarize them.
  • Texts appear as Texts activities, with the message, whether it was iMessage, SMS or RCS, and who sent it. Edits update the same entry, and unsent messages show as Unsent message. Attachments are logged as links.
  • Group texts are logged on every group member who’s in Attio, starting with who sent the message and the group’s name.
  • History: when a contact is first linked to an Attio person, the last 30 days of your texts with them are added too.
Attio may group several texts in a row under one timeline entry. Click it to see each text. Admins choose what’s logged under Communication activity in the Attio settings. Turning Texts or Calls off stops new activity. What’s already in Attio stays.
Attio shows texts with a default icon. An Attio admin can pick another, such as a chat bubble, in Attio under Settings → Activities → Texts.
Blujay links a contact to an Attio person on its own when exactly one person in Attio has the contact’s phone number. For anyone else, open the contact’s details in Blujay and use the Attio section:
  • Find in Attio looks the contact up by phone and email. If exactly one person has their phone number, Blujay links them. If there are several possible matches, click Review and choose the right person, or none of them.
  • Create in Attio adds a new person with the contact’s name, phone and email. Blujay checks Attio for a match first, so nobody is added twice. If the contact has no name or email, Blujay asks for one.
  • Once linked, the section says Linked. Click it to open the person in Attio.
When a contact is linked, Blujay fills in their name and email from Attio if they’re missing in Blujay. Creating people needs Attio’s permission to write records. If you see Reconnect Attio to create people, an owner or admin reconnects Attio from the Attio settings. Finding and linking keep working in the meantime.

Texts in Attio workflows

Blujay adds two blocks to Attio’s workflow builder, under Blujay: a Send text step and a Text received trigger. Both run as a teammate you choose under Run as. That teammate needs to have connected their Blujay account in Attio, and Attio asks them to allow the workflow to use it.

Send text

Add Send text to a workflow, choose the Person (usually the record the workflow runs on), and write the Message. You can use the workflow’s variables in it.
  • Phone number (optional): leave it blank to use the number you’ve texted them at before, or their first US number.
  • Send from (optional): leave it blank to use the line they already know. For someone new, Blujay uses your only line, or the default line of their owner (see Contact owner), or else the Run as teammate’s default line.
The text is sent as the Run as teammate, with all of Blujay’s usual rules, and is logged on the person’s timeline like any other text. The step then follows one of two paths:
  • Sent, with the Blujay message ID. Blujay picks iMessage, RCS or SMS just after the text is accepted.
  • Not sent, with the reason: the person opted out, has no number Blujay can text, none of your lines can text them, a sending limit was reached, a first-text rule (links, length) applies, or your plan or line doesn’t allow it.
If Attio retries a step, Blujay still sends the text only once.

Text received

Start a workflow with Text received to act on replies, for example to update the person or create a task for their owner.
  • Conversation type: direct texts only (the default), group texts only, or both.
  • Line (optional): leave it blank for texts to any of your Blujay lines.
Each incoming text starts one run with the Person (when exactly one Attio person has the sender’s number), the text, the sender’s number, the line, and when it arrived. A text from someone who isn’t in Attio still starts a run, with no person, so the workflow can add them.

Contact sync

With contact sync on, people added to Attio become Blujay contacts automatically, with their name, email and phone number.
  • Only people added after contact sync is turned on are added. People already in Attio aren’t imported, and neither are people added while it’s off.
  • A person needs a US phone number to be added.
  • If they’re already a Blujay contact, Blujay links them and only fills in details that are missing. It never overwrites what you have.
  • If Blujay can’t tell which contact they match, it doesn’t add them.
Contact sync is on by default. To turn it off, open the Attio settings, turn off Contact sync, then click Save contact sync. Your existing contacts aren’t deleted.

Contact owner

Blujay can assign each contact to the teammate who owns them in Attio. Attio has no built-in owner for people, so you choose which of your People fields holds the owner: any field that holds one workspace member (a User field), such as your own Owner field.
  1. Open the Attio settings in Blujay.
  2. Under Contact owner, choose the field, then click Save contact owner.
From then on:
  • When the owner changes in Attio, Blujay assigns the contact and their conversation to that teammate, so their texts and forwarded calls go to them. The conversation keeps its number.
  • If someone reassigns the conversation in Blujay, that sticks until the owner changes in Attio again.
  • Only owners linked to a Blujay teammate under Team members count. Removing an owner in Attio, or choosing someone who isn’t linked, leaves the Blujay assignment as it is. Group conversations never move.
  • People with no conversation yet start their first one with their owner, and texts to them from an Attio workflow go out from the owner’s default line.
When you first choose a field, Blujay applies it to every contact already linked to Attio. To stop, choose Don’t sync. Current assignments stay as they are.

Manage the connection

Who can change settings. Anyone on your team can open the Attio settings. Only a Blujay owner or admin can change them. Add teammates later. When someone joins Attio after setup, open the Attio settings, click Team member mapping, choose their Blujay teammate and click Save team members. Disconnect. Open the Attio settings and click Disconnect Attio, then Disconnect. Logging and contact sync stop. Everything already in Attio stays, and contacts already added to Blujay are kept. You can reconnect at any time from the same page.

Common problems

Attio needs one more approval from you. Click Reconnect on the Attio card and allow access again. Calls keep logging in the meantime.
Texts are logged as a custom activity, which your Attio plan doesn’t include. Calls keep logging. Blujay starts logging texts on its own once your Attio plan supports them.
Blujay only logs to a person when exactly one Attio person has the contact’s phone number. Check that the number is on the right person in Attio, and on only one. Also check that Texts and Calls are on under Communication activity.
That teammate isn’t matched yet. Ask your workspace admin to match them under Team member mapping in the Attio settings.
Refresh the Contacts page first: contacts added in the background show after a refresh. Then check that contact sync is on, the person has a US phone number, and they were added after contact sync was turned on. If they could match more than one Blujay contact, Blujay leaves them for you to add.
The Messages tab appears on its own once Blujay is connected: refresh the page. If an admin removed it, they can add it back from Configure page, then Add tab, then Messages. The widget is added by an admin; see Add the Blujay widget in Attio.
None of your Blujay numbers can text this conversation. Open it in Blujay, or ask your workspace admin about your numbers.
The contact opted out, so Blujay won’t text or call them. If they ask to hear from you again, restore messaging on the contact in Blujay.
Your Blujay connection in Attio needs to be set up again. Open the Messages tab, click Connect Blujay, then Connect next to your name, and sign in with the account you text from.
Blujay couldn’t be reached just then. Click Try again. If it keeps happening, contact support.
Close the window and click Connect again. Make sure you allow Blujay when Attio asks, and that you’re still a Blujay owner or admin.
