# Message statuses and Not Delivered

> What Sending, Sent, Delivered, Read and Not Delivered mean, and what to do when a message doesn't send.

Under the most recent message you sent, Blujay shows where it is, the same way your iPhone does in Messages.

## What each status means

| Status | What it means |
| - | - |
| *(no status yet)* | Your message is on its way. Like Messages on iPhone, Blujay doesn't show a status while a message is sending normally. |
| **Sending...** | Your message is taking longer than usual to go out. Give it a moment. |
| **Sent** | Your text message (SMS) has left Blujay. |
| **Delivered** | Your message reached their phone. |
| **Read** | They've opened it. You'll only see this if they share read receipts, and it may show the time, for example **Read 3:42 PM**. |
| **Not Delivered** | Your message couldn't be sent. See below. |
| **Not Sent** | A scheduled text or automation that Blujay held because the contact hadn't replied yet, either a link or the 6-text limit. The reason shows under the message. Once the contact replies, send it again as a new message. |

Only your latest sent message shows a status, to keep the conversation easy to read.

> [!NOTE]
>
> Blujay doesn't tell your contacts when you've read their messages.

## When a message says Not Delivered

A message that couldn't be sent shows **Not Delivered** in red, and the conversation shows a red alert icon in your inbox.

Blujay doesn't resend it automatically, and doesn't switch it to a different kind of message. To try again:

1. Copy the text of the message.
2. Send it again as a new message.

If it fails again, check the reasons below.

## Why a message might not be delivered

* **The number can't receive it.** For example, it's a landline, or the number is no longer in service.
* **You sent a lot of messages in a short time.** Each Blujay number has a limit on how many messages it can send in an hour. Wait a while, then send again.
* **The attachment isn't supported.** SMS can only carry photos, videos and contact cards, up to 5 MB in total. See [Sharing links, photos and videos](https://support.blujay.io/messaging/links-and-media.md).

> [!WARNING]
>
> **Lots of messages from one number suddenly say Not Delivered?** Stop sending from that number and email [support@blujay.io](mailto:support@blujay.io) right away. We'll check the number and help you get back to sending.

If one of your messages to a contact can't go out as iMessage, your next message to them may go out as a text message instead. Check what the message box says before you send.

## Messages that don't send at all

Sometimes Blujay can't send a message, and keeps your draft in the message box instead with a note at the top of the conversation.

> [accordion] "You've reached today's new-contact limit for this line."
>
> Each Blujay number can only start a certain number of new conversations a day. You can still message people you've already talked to, choose a different number under **From**, or wait until tomorrow. See [Your first text to a new lead](https://support.blujay.io/messaging/first-text.md#daily-limit-for-new-contacts).

> [accordion] "This contact is opted out. Restore messaging to send or call."
>
> This contact asked not to be contacted, so Blujay blocks messages and calls to them. Only choose **Restore messaging** if they've clearly asked to hear from you again. See [Following up](https://support.blujay.io/messaging/follow-ups.md#when-someone-asks-you-to-stop).

> [accordion] "SMS and RCS messages cannot be replied to in a thread."
>
> Replying to a specific message only works on iMessage. Send a regular message instead.
