# Calling

> Call contacts from your Blujay number, choose where incoming calls ring, and set up voicemail.

You can call contacts from your Blujay numbers on the web, on the iPhone app, and from Follow Up Boss with the Chrome extension. Your contacts see your Blujay number when you call, and their calls to that number reach you and your team.

## Make a call on the web

**1. Open the conversation**

Open a conversation with the contact, or their contact details.

**2. Click the phone button**

Click the phone button (**Call**) at the top of the conversation. If your workspace has more than one Blujay number, the call comes from the number selected for that conversation.

**3. Allow your microphone**

The first time you call, your browser asks to use your microphone. Click **Allow**. The call starts in your browser.

During the call, a bar across the top of Blujay shows the timer, with **Dialpad**, **Mute** and **Hang up**.

To call a number that isn't saved yet, click **+** (**New message**), type the number next to **To:**, and click the phone button.

## Make a call on the iPhone app

Open a conversation or contact and tap **Call contact**. The call uses your iPhone's call screen, with **Mute**, **Speaker** and **End Call**.

## Make a call from Follow Up Boss

With the [Chrome extension](https://support.blujay.io/chrome-extension.md), click **Call with Blujay** next to a phone number in Follow Up Boss.

## FaceTime Audio

Some Blujay numbers can also place FaceTime Audio calls. When yours can, you'll see a **FaceTime Audio** button next to the phone button.

* FaceTime Audio only works with contacts who use FaceTime. If someone isn't on FaceTime, the button is greyed out and Blujay tells you, so you can make a regular call instead.
* Each Blujay number has a daily limit on FaceTime Audio calls to new contacts. Hover over the **FaceTime Audio** button to see how many are left. You can always FaceTime people you've already talked to.

## Where incoming calls ring

When someone calls your Blujay number:

* **If the conversation is assigned to a teammate,** the call rings that teammate.
* **If it isn't assigned,** it rings your workspace's default forwarding number, and everyone who's chosen to answer unassigned calls in their browser.
* **If nobody answers** within about 20 seconds, the caller can leave a voicemail.

### Set your forwarding number

Your forwarding number is the phone that rings for calls assigned to you.

1. In the web app, click your profile picture at the bottom of the left sidebar, then click **Call Settings**.
2. Enter your number under **Forwarding Number** and click **Save**.

Workspace owners and admins set the default forwarding number for unassigned calls in **Settings → Account**.

### Answer calls in your browser

Calls can also ring in Blujay itself, so you can answer from your computer. Choose how in **Notification Settings**, under **Ring me on**:

| Option | What rings |
| - | - |
| **Browser and phone** | Your open Blujay tabs and your phone ring together |
| **Browser only** | Only your open Blujay tabs ring |
| **Phone only** | Only your phone rings |

Turn on **Ring me for unassigned calls** to also ring for calls nobody's assigned to. Whoever answers first takes the call.

When a call rings in your browser, you'll see **Incoming call** with **Answer** and **Decline**. Click **Silence** (or press Esc) to stop the ringing without declining. Blujay needs to be open and signed in, in a browser tab or the Chrome extension, and you'll need to allow your microphone to answer.

## Voicemail

### Set your voicemail greeting

1. Click your profile picture, then **Call Settings**.
2. Under **Voicemail Greeting**, choose **Custom**, then **Record** your greeting or **Upload** an audio file (up to 60 seconds).
3. Click **Save**.

Callers hear your greeting for conversations assigned to you. Without one, they hear your workspace's greeting, or a standard message.

### Listen to voicemails

Voicemails appear in the conversation as a card with a player, and the conversation shows **Voicemail** in your inbox.

## Transcripts and summaries

Answered calls and voicemails show a short preview on their card. Click the card to open **Call details**, with a summary of the conversation and **View transcript** for the full transcript. Summaries are only created when there was a real back-and-forth conversation.

## Missed calls and private callers

* A missed call shows **Missed call** in the conversation and marks it unread.
* Calls from blocked or private numbers show as **Private caller**. You can see and assign them, but you can't text them back.

## Common problems

> [accordion] It says "Microphone access is blocked"
>
> Your browser is blocking your microphone for Blujay. Click the icon at the left of the address bar, set **Microphone** to **Allow**, and reload the page.

> [accordion] It says "Line is currently busy"
>
> Someone on your team is already on a call from that Blujay number. Wait for it to end, or call from a different number.

> [accordion] It says "This line is unavailable" or "Calling is unavailable"
>
> The Blujay number can't place calls right now. Try again in a moment. If it keeps happening, [contact support](https://support.blujay.io/contact.md).

> [accordion] It says "No callable phone number"
>
> The contact doesn't have a phone number Blujay can call. Add one to their contact details.

> [accordion] It says the contact is opted out
>
> This contact asked not to be contacted, so Blujay blocks calls and messages to them. Only choose **Restore messaging** if they've clearly asked to hear from you again.

> [accordion] It says "Daily limit for new FaceTime contacts reached"
>
> Your number has made all its FaceTime Audio calls to new contacts for today. Make a regular call instead, or try again after the time shown.

> [accordion] My phone doesn't ring for incoming calls
>
> Check your **Forwarding Number** in **Call Settings**, and your **Ring me on** choice in **Notification Settings**. Calls for conversations assigned to someone else ring them, not you.
